Sports Hypnosis Chicago
I'm Paul S. Palmer, Mental Skills Coach,
director of the Sports Motivation Clinic. Award winning author of
Performing Under Pressure,
helping Chicago area athletes master
their mental game since 1985. Sports Psychology made easy.
What's Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is guided relaxation. The same relaxation
you pass through every night on your way to sleep. Hypnosis has been
around for a few hundred years and it's the
oldest tool to help
athletic performance. Before sports psychology there was hypnosis. I
can teach you simple relaxation techniques that can help any athlete
master their mental game.
What hypnosis isn't
If you think hypnosis is scary, the work of the devil, mind-control
or you are worried it will make you cluck like a chicken, you have
to get your head out of the Dark Ages. Think of anything you ever
saw in the movies where the evil hypnotist sent his helpless victims
out to do dastardly deeds. Then ask yourself, have you ever seen
anything like that on the 6 o'clock news? Have you ever read in the
newspaper of that sort of thing happening anywhere? No, no, a
thousand times, no.
Hypnosis is not some kind of demonic mind control. Hypnosis is a
wonderful tool that can help YOU maximize
YOUR own mental abilities.
It's Guided Relaxation and that's
it. Sad to say, the athletes and coaches that have a negative
opinion of hypnosis don't know anything about it!!! I can't make them any smarter but I can help
you. I can teach you how to use the oldest tool to help athletes
master their mental game.
Am I hypnotized during the game?
No. The hypnosis (guided relaxation) process happens off the field.
First, in my office and then guided by your CD in the comfort of your
own home. The locker room isn't the place to work on your mental
game. You want a place where you won't be disturbed, away for all
distractions. It's homework!
What happens when I'm in a trance?
One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnosis is the you are out
of it, in a trance, unconscious and under the spell of the
hypnotist. That's only in the movies. You are only relaxing in the
same way you would relax if you were intending on taking a nap. You
use this relaxation to program in what you want to have happen
during the game. Think of it as getting mental reps at winning so
that during the real game you have this experience logged it. Make
sense?
Will hypnosis interfere with coaching?
No, never. I don't tell you how to play
your sport, only how to master your mental game, under pressure. However your coaching will
always be brought into the mental exercises.
So, I hope you are
getting good advice.
Who uses hypnosis techniques?
The list is longer than your arm but here is a small sample. Jack
Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rod Carew, Mary Lou Retton, Lee Evans, Ken
Norton, George Brett, Jimmy Connors, Wayne Gretsky, Chris Evert,
Bill Buckner, Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls, the 1983
Chicago White Sox, a few Chicago Bears, no
Cubs (explains the 108 year drought), players on the 2010, 2013 and
2015 Chicago Blackhawks, and Olympic Athletes by the thousands going
back to the 1950's, have used techniques derived from hypnosis. I know
what they are using and I can teach you too.
